Becoming a Norwex Consultant

Starting in January of 2014, I was a Norwex consultant for a grand total of three hours.

Quitter?  Not usually.

So why the land speed record of quittertude in direct sales?

Allow me to explain.

I was attracted to Norwex after buying two of their products on Ebay and was pleased with how they worked.  I was looking for some extra income and liked their philosophy of fewer chemicals in the home.  I contacted a local Norwex consultant and agreed to sign up.

I wish I had all the facts before I became a Norwex consultant.

Norwex gives new consultants 90 days to sell $2000 (retail) worth of product.  Otherwise the consultant must fork over $200 for their "starter package" which consists of training material, order forms, catalogues, and a few Norwex products...everything you would need to start selling.

So when do the 90 days start?

From the day you sign up, not the day that you get your materials. And by the way, Norwex estimates that time at between 5-10 business days.   I called Norwex to ask about this, and was told that "you have the website to start selling things from."

Great.  So I should be facilitating Norwex parties with NO training, NO products, and NO way to order other than pointing customers to the website during my first two weeks?

Oh, and your 90 days are counting down.

I contacted Norwex about this and was told, "Yea, sorry.  That is just the way it is."

Well I better be paid well if I can sell their products without having any to show or knowing anything about them.  Right?

In their literature, Norwex claims that their reps get a minimum of 35% of sales, and more if they have people "under" them.

As soon as I was confirmed as a consultant, I was given access to the website, and wanting to purchase a few items as gifts for friends and family, I started to place a "personal and supply" order.

The 35% discount was taken off the retail price, which was all well and good.

Then I looked at the checkout screen.

I noticed that on an order of $58.80 (with the 35% discount), I was being charged $6.89 in tax.  Interesting.  My state has a sales tax rate of 7%.

Now I am no mathemagician, but according to my calculations, 7% of $58.80 is $4.12 if I round up.  So how did Norwex arrive at $6.89 in tax?

Bear with me here...this is important.

They charge sales tax on the full retail price, not the money they are actually collecting, and pocketing the difference!

Is this legal?

So the full retail price of my order was $90.47.  Let's say for the moment that charging sales tax on money not collected is okay.  Is $6.89 seven percent of $90.47?  NO!! That would be  $6.33.

I made another phone inquiry to Norwex on the matter and was told that seven percent of $58.80 is $6.89.

Wait...I have heard of these.  Magic sevens that look like sevens but are, in fact, twelves.

Where are they getting this $6.89 in tax from?

Let's take a look at the shipping charges.  Norwex charges $7.95 in shipping and handling fees on an order that includes 3 washcloths and one infant towel.

Those must be some pretty heavy washcloths!

If you add $90.47 retail price PLUS $7.95 in shipping, and then calculate 7%, you come up with $6.89 in tax.

Why are all these dollars and cents so important?

Yea, more math.

If you place an order on behalf of your customer for $90.47 retail, you personally wind up paying $73.64 with exorbitant shipping and the unethical taxes.

Your income is the difference between these two numbers...

a whopping 19% sales commission!!

Wait...what happened to 35% commission?  Well, you could pass the questionable charges on to your customer, at which point they will be paying nearly $15 in taxes and shipping on top of the $90 order they just placed.

If you were your customer, would you come back for more?

So after three very frustrating hours, I faxed in a resignation letter and asked Norwex to cancel my subscription and cancel my $200 starter package.  I was told that in the last three hours, they had already sent a form to their shipping department and there is no way to stop the processing of that order.  The only thing Norwex can do is wait till FedEx has it in their hands, then charge me $15 to have FedEx redirect it back to them.

If you are considering becoming a Norwex consultant, please be aware that Norwex will nickel and dime you at every turn.  You pay for shipping, you pay for order forms, promotional items, flyers, oh yea and $10 a month for the privilege of using their website for your customers to place online orders.  All of this and more comes out of the very iffy 35% commission you are supposed to be earning. It seems they care about their pocketbook alone, and wave the banner of "saving the environment" over the whole production in order to make more money.

Go for it, sad little bear.
By the way, Amazon.com has a Norwex store where customers can buy the same products for about the same price and get it faster, or they can shop on Ebay for less.  Or you could buy E-cloths which are the same thing but half the cost. Try selling product after somebody mentions that at a party.

When I was considering becoming a Norwex consultant, I did research on the company and tried to find out about other people's experiences selling Norwex.  Information like this was nowhere to be found.  After my ordeal, I knew I had to help others avoid the mess I had found myself in, even if it meant starting a web page.

    1. I AM a Norwex consultant and I LOVE the company. I have gotten SO MANY products free - they have an amazing incentive system for consultants AND hosts - and the 35% commission is great! Yes, you pay shipping and tax on personal orders - but if you host a party yourself, you can collect the host rewards, get free host shipping, and make your 35%. I never place personal supply orders because I don't need to - I order through my own parties or use the free products provided!! Since this person only made it 3 hours, I'd take it with a grain of salt. My 9 months have been great and have allowed me to stay home after the birth of my second child 3 months ago. As for the Amazon and e-cloths -- there's a reason Norwex has been so successful all over the world - they have great products that are durable and effective! Also I would caution ordering on eBay - I've heard of knockoffs being sold there that don't hold up (and since consultants are not supposed to be selling there, there's a good chance it's not a legit company rep). I hope you reconsider if this was something you wanted to do and don't let one bad experience (though none of this was really bad??) sway you. I'd love to tell you more about my experience.

    5. I’d be very careful about who you join under. The person I started buying Norwex from no longer sells and the person I joined under has been awful! She offers no support and continues invite me to her Facebook parties such as Tupperware and Avon. I was just a check in a box for her to get free items. Unfortunately, you are stuck under whoever you join under. I have no desire to sell anymore because I don’t want that person to benefit from what I’ve had to teach myself.

  3. Aren't you glad you didn't start a "real business" where you had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on inventory, employees, building leases, lawyers, accountants, licenses.... etc. This person sounds like a whiner and won't ever be successful in any business. I hope you like your job, your employee mentality will keep you there for life. By the way, I am not a Norwex consultant, but I respect anybody that is willing to start a business and pursue their dreams.

    3. This is a perfect example of uneducated, quick to react blog. Norwex products are awesome and I will gladly pay the shipping to get a quality product....really if you don't want to pay the price go to the dollar store. You get what you pay for and Norwex will last a long time if you take care of it, not to mention all the savings in cleaning supplies and what you are doing for your health as well.

    9. I am sorry to see this person had a negative experience. When I signed up as a Norwex consultant, I received SO MUCH support from the consultant who recruited me - personal phone calls, texts, video chats, Facebook groups, etc. So I NEVER felt like I didn't have training. It took 1 week for me to get my supplies, but in the meantime I was able to start talking to others about it and setting up my site, my launch party, and showing off the catalogue my "recruiter" (for lack of a better word) left me with. In my first month, I am at $1000 sales (toward the required $2,000). I have two more parties this month, and two scheduled for next month, so I'm pretty sure I'll get my $2,000 in the first 90 days. Even if I didn't make it though, I got a TON of free products in my starter kit - including the mop which is AT LEAST $100 for the entire thing. On top of that, because I met my first 15 day goal and my 30 day goal, I got even MORE goodies sent to me FREE. And because I was the host for my launch party, I got the host rewards package as well! I have SO MANY Norwex products now that I am using them as rewards and prizes at my parties. Yes, I did have to invest in some extra catalogues and order forms, and I bought a few things for my own home - but overall I have been really happy with the experience.

    11. I too have had a great experience with Norwex. So much professional training available for FREE whereas most other companies charge for it. Example: FIVE seminars by Belinda Elsworth that we could watch live for FREE. The training is sooo good - if you want to learn to master direct sales, you will like Norwex. Integrity. Trust. Respect. They stand by those values. And, if your kit is delayed and arrives more than 4 or 5 days after you sign up, they will adjust your 90 day deadline. My sister signed up and her kit arrived the NEXT day - in a different state. Highly recommended

      Delete
  4. You are not required to purchase the starter kit. It costs you $10 initially to pay shipping and it's very, very easy to hit your 90 day goal if you choose to get the kit. You are paid "well". 35% commissions are not bad at all. But they are commissions, regardless if you purchase them yourself or not. Because of this, you still have to pay tax on the full retail price. And yes, you still pay shipping because it costs money to ship. $7.95 is the price whether or not you purchase 4 cloths or a whole mop system and my last order came in 5 days. Norwex on Amazon is sold by a 3rd party and for more than you pay Norwex for, plus I'm not fully certain that you get the warranty that way. Tax is always figured after shipping and handling when you purchase anything anywhere. There are always costs for having a business and the costs for Norwex catalogs and order forms is not all that expensive. Order forms are a penny a piece! You don't place an personal order on behalf of anyone. You place an order in their name and they pay the taxes and shipping, so yes, you still get your full 35%. I think you just didn't fully understand how this all works and had a knee jerk reaction. I love Norwex and they've been great to work with. :-)

    1. I agree! I haven't spent hardly anything and sold over $3000 in just 3 months. I didn't even get the full starter kit. I got the smaller kit with NO obligation in their February promotion. If you are doing Norwex solely through parties each person only has to pay $5.99 for party shipping to the host. I started off with 5 catalogs (that came in my starter kit) and they got me through my first 3 months of home and Facebook parties. I don't use order forms. All you have to do is check have the order number for returns and inquiries. The only time I bought something was because I wanted it (like my mop since I got the smaller no-obligation kit it did't come with one) and I ended up spending half of one of my commissions to go toward my business supplies and a bunch of 35% off items I could use for FREEBIES and giveaways at parties. The customer service has been EXCELLENT every time I have contacted them. It has been very worth it for our family of 7 to let me out 2-3 times a month to do parties so we can have this additional income:)

    2. I've never found this to be an issue. I'm a Norwex consultant and I get my commission. Yes, there are things you have to buy but that's true with any business. You have to invest in yourself. And most brick and mortar businesses run a profit margin of far less than thirty five percent and still have to reinvest out of that! If you want better facts, please contact me!

      Delete
    3. That’s incorrect. Not all states allow shipping to be taxed. I happen to live in a state where as long as shipping is listed separately it is not taxable. However, if it’s referred to as shipping and handling is can be taxed. So it isn’t always taxable anywhere you buy it.

  5. So if I choose to become a consultant I don't have to get the starter kit? I can just go sell using the products I already have? What would be my out of pocket cost to get started?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To be a an official Consultant you do need to sign up. The out of pocket cost depends on how you join and if you sell. For example, this month you can join for the $10 ( plus tax) and get their free kit without sales requirement, you get $60 in products which is nice, or you can join with the standard kit and pay the same price.. that comes with alot more products and you have 90 days from signing up to gather $2,000 retail so that your kit is free... either way you join definately do the fresh start program and make yourself the hostess for your first party so you can get the almost $300 in free product! I encourage my discout buyers to do that 1 party just to get their freebies, which most of them do! :)

    1. You've stumbled across very skewed inaccurate information. Some states require by law that tax be charged on the total amount meaning including the shipping cost. Get mad at the insane government for that one. Not Norwex. She had a poor upline consultant if they told her to just sign up without having any product or any parties booked to get her rolling. I hate scam stuff and awful direct sales companies. I've done a few. Norwex is the best one and the CHEAPEST to get involved with. If her upline didn't do anything to help her in the beginning with information and product to get her started before her kit arrived then she didn't have a very helpful one. Not to mention most kits really arrive in 3 days. I've not had any people have to wait longer than 3. Being with the company for a whopping 3 hrs shows that much assuming happened with her and that she didn't truly take much time to figure this out but chose to blast the company. She's missing out too, because it is truly 35% in commissions. I have statements to show it! This company is awesome! I've been with them for 2 years and still love it just as much as I did when I joined!! Read Em Hernandez's comment below for me info. It's 100% accurate.

  7. I am a consultant and I too have been VERY disappointed at every turn. I have been with them for 6 months and am currently looking for the instructions to quit. It's true, there are products that are just as good, if not better, for less.

    Replies
    1. Hi Ashley dickinson... I'm also a Consultant and there are no instructions to quit. You don't have to sell anything at all. You can keep the discount for yourself that's all! :) I did want to address some of the writers issues. I have been a consultant for 8 months now. I joined bec I knew I wanted the discount. The o0 day $2,000 goal is there for people who want to earn their product for free. I didn't want to sell it and felt fine paying the $200 bec the products I was receiving included their mop system, the double sided mop head, detergent, and household package...along with their busInes docs which I wasn't interested bec I wasn't going to sell it. So anyways. The 35% commission is absolutely true. AND there are 2 ways to place orders..1 is for customer orders and they are required to charge the tax on full price items to the customer bec they are not giving a siscount, we are if we are.... anyways the 2nd way to order is through personal orders and you get the 35% discount and the tax is based on the wholesale price. I think the author of this post probably didn't know bec she wasn't around long enough to learn this. And they virtual office is free for 2 months. After it's $9.99 and it is NOT a requirement. You can always enter orders yourself in your " back office" and avoid the charge. For me I don't have the time to enter orders and it is alot easier and of course better for me to have a website for people to order from themselves. I don't know of any DS company that provides that svc for free. In my short time as a consultant I have learned 1 thing. Norwex is a very generous company. One of the things I Love is the amount of free product they give to someone who hosts a party and I as the consultant get to be the Hostess every 45 days which means I cN earn commission AND the Hostess freebies! I do think that I was fortunate to join under a very supportive and fun team and have never felt pressured to sell or do anything I didn't want to. Most of the gals are all mom's who are working at whichever level they feel comfortable, I have NEVER received a call abt my sales...and wouldn't welcome that either...and by the way there are some months where you can join Norwex for $10 ( +tax) and you get $60 worth of product( retail) and you have no sales requirement at all.. in fact this is one of those months... I do think finding a good up line is key.. most of us have joined through a friend and it makes it more of a casual fun type of thing... I laughed at the first meeting where I saw mom's in yoga pants, some with babies, some coming fr work there were all kinds and it sis not feel like a " sales" meeting at all.. everyone was so nice and ohmgosh very helpful... it's not a cut throat competition.. I have never felt that way and I sure wouldn't want anyone on my team to feel that way at all! I mean we re selling green cleaning products, most of my parties are done in very co.fy clothing and I keep it simple... so anyways, just wanted to pass on a different perspective... sorry you had a bad experience...for those who are considering joining find a good up line and have fun!

  10. I don't think you understand the tax process this is not ripping people off all independent consultant companies charge tax on retail. Do you really think one company can do this and not have the tax commission after them. When I read blogs like yours I get very sad that people do not do this homework before spouting off and trying to ruin a companies reputation. If you had dome your homework you would have known this prior to selling. Norwex is correct in the process of collecting taxes and shipping well go try to ship something and see what the cost is. I hope you do your research next time before you chose to provide inaccurate information to the public.

  15. As others have correctly stated, it is state law that sales tax be charged on the full retail price plus shipping. I was the accountant for a group of motorcycle dealerships for 20 years, and was in charge of everything to do with sales tax including dealing with state auditors, so I know what I am talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The way they are collecting tax is State mandated.
The consultant does get 35%, and the customer pays tax. If you want to pay the tax and shipping yourself, that is totally on you.
Also - Norwex has a flat shipping rate. No matter what you buy, the rate is the same. It's not a scam. If you want to get around it, post all the orders from one party on one order, and have it shipped to your house.
I guess I am not seeing how your review is really negative, rather than just annoyed.
Compared to other direct sales companies that are specifically designed to make money of scamming consultants (Mary Kay, Amway, etc) - Norwex is probably the best direct-sales company out there.

I am a new Norwex Consultant, I have already sold a 1,000 in product, got a 400.00 commission check, and almost 450.00 in free product between reaching my goals and discount specials, I'm not complaining. You have to work at it to become successful. It's not easy getting clients, but once you start spreading the word I been noticing people coming to me. Like any online selling you have to pay shipping fees with everybody you order from. All companies that ship charge fees.
I been excited to be a part of Norwex, and I have a great positive team that keep me going.

  18. I'm having my first party tonight and then I will probably sign up to be a consultant after the new year to get all the freebies. I have a full time job but just in talking to people about it I already have people that want to buy that can't come to tonight and want me to bring them a catalog. I will save those for my $2000 so I can get the kit for free. So the part about not being able to sell until you get your kit I don't see as a problem at all. I think Norwex is an awesome company with a great business model and I see why they have grown so fast!

  19. Sales tax collected on retail because that is the price point you are suppose to be retail selling it at. You can submit a correction with your state, reporting the discounted amount you sold the product for vs the retail and be reimbursed the difference in tax. OR you can get a resale license, file and pay your own sales taxes every month. They are doing a service for you. And when you become a consultant, you are not an employee...you are and INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR. Independent Contractor in any field of business (construction, catering, etc) all file their own tax forms and payments. You had your own business and did not treat it like one. As far as the kit, they loaned you the kit in good faith that you would work your business so you would have something to work with. When you are a vendor most companies only give you 15 to 30 days to pay the invoice. They give you 15 to 30 days to resell the item, and then pay them back. That's credit. Training? It's out there on YouTube. Don't misrepresent a company when you have no clue about running a business.

  20. I thank you for posting your experience. I am considering becoming a consultant and your experience shows just how informed we need to be before making this decision and how much work, time, and money we are willing to put into it. I am sorry you had such a bad experience. I've been to a few parties and hosted (which meant free products for me) and after using them for a few months I love them and want to share them with others. The consultant who wants to sponsor me is very helpful and I trust her to work with her. I think this is very important before deciding to be a consultant, to have some experience with the product and a person you trust instead of some online sponsor you've never met. Do be careful about signing up just for discounts. Make sure all the costs are really worth it. Thanks again for sharing to help others avoid the same bad experience.

  26. Thank you for misinforming everyone! I am a distributor for an essential oils company and I am charged sales tax on the retail amount. All companies are required to do this in states where there is a sales tax. They are also required to charge tax on shipping in most states. They are NOT pocketing the money. They are sending it to your state and the state is pocketing the money. As for training you were not with the company long enough to know if you were going to get training. They ship kits right away so you get it fast so you can get started right away. You should get the kit in 5-7 days during which time you can get bookings an training. It’s unfortunate you gave up and threw in the towel so quickly. But don’t pass on your own personal failure as the fault of the company! They are more generous then any other company I have ever worked with.

  28. I appreciate the review as I'm thinking about signing up with Norwex, if anything to get the kit itself for free (by earning it). I am actually very experienced with direct sales, and things such as paying for the website and paying for business supplies are very typical for many DS companies. Also, most any DS company starts you on the day you sign up (not the day your kit arrives). But in today's climate, you can do FB parties and use graphics from Pinterest and videos from YouTube while you wait for your kit to arrive, then do LIVE videos with the kit itself. I do think the cost of the kit, if you don't earn it, could be a bit pricy, but I also think that if you know you can get the sales or have friends who are interested, you can actually do quite well and get the kit free and even earn commission. I'm sorry you did not have such a great experience, but it helps to read the fine print before signing up for any DS company. And I do think it's good to make sure people know these details before signing up -- just so you know what to expect, so in that regard, your review was very helpful. I am still thinking about signing up, but you did point out some of the "fine print" things that you'd see in many companies and I think anyone signing up needs to know these facts first beforehand. I hope you'll consider giving direct sales another shot -- whether with Norwex or a different company. It's honestly a lot of fun and my business with a different company has allowed me to stay home with my kids and quit my full-time teaching job so I can be there for my family. A lot of good can come from direct sales and my experiences have been TERRIFIC!!!
